The Criminal trial commences when the investigation is completed and the final report is filed before the court of law. The Magistrate Courts have jurisdiction to try the cases where the offenses complained of are punishable by a maximum period of three years.

Above the Magistrate Courts, the Chief Judicial Magistrate or Chief Metropolitan Magistrate is vested with powers to try cases, where the offenses complained of, are punishable with imprisonment more than three years buts up to seven (7) years.

The Sessions Court exercises its powers to try cases punishable with the imprisonment of more than seven (7) years.
